Sewing

8/16/25, 9/1/25

She sat and worked in silence in her sewing
And little did she know her face was glowing
In such a simple task, her soul was singing
How plentiful the fruits her love was bringing!

This Little Flower set before the table
Has brought her Child such joy as she was able
A needle pulling thread: so small a motion
Has reached the broad expanses of an ocean

How could such an action be so reaching
Now to worldwide audiences teaching?
In Love, this simple soul has found her glory
As distant times and lands now hear her story

Inspiration: “I sat and worked in silence in my sewing” – sentence in Autobiography of Therese of Lisieux

Falling in Love

8/18/25 (Posted)
8/17/25 (Written)

Falling in love is like falling asleep
So deeply it’s sought to then savor and keep
Yet often, when sought with each ounce of our might
It vanishes there on the spot from our sight

We grasp and we groan for that treasure so lost
And ask ourselves what to regain it would cost
It’s then that we realize what lies at the heart
Of gaining that bliss is indeed such an art

An art filled with tact, yet detached from the way
The treasure is given at night or in day
Control is a thing that we value, and yet
We know there are powers beyond our own net

And so, here’s to Love and to unending Rest
Where happiness lives now in full with the Blessed
The twists and the turns of the life we live now
Are worth what they bring us! He’ll soon show us how

In the Stillness

8/10/25 (posted)
8/8/25 (written)

In the stillness of the night
Came a whisper and a Light
“I have seen your toil and strife
And have come to bring you Life

“How you labored, full of Love!
How you set your heart above
Things of little value here
Holding Me instead so dear

“Come, dear servant, take your rest
Find your place among the blessed
You fought the fight and won the race
Come, behold eternal Grace!”

Dusk and Dawn: 100 Poems for Prayer

7/13/25

The day has come! For those who have responded to my poems saying, “I’m going to take this to my prayer!” or “You should publish a book!”: I finally have a book of poems for prayer that I can share with you.

Many thanks to everyone who have supported me in the 17-year poetic journey that has culminated with this book. Find me on pilgrimpoet.blog and Substack (https://substack.com/@cjamesherrick4) where I plan to continue the journey with you. Enjoy!

Heart for All

7/26/24

What a Heart You gave for all!
Everything for everyone
Making up for every fall
What a Victory You won!

Fill me with Your Loving Heart
Never let me from You part
Let me share Your Glory gained
Even if, in this Way, I’m pained

Is it such a secret now
Seeing, knowing, loving how
You gave Your Life to set us free?
Such Happiness: grant all may see

First Love

7/24/24

You lost the Love you had at first
What once was best became the worst
The ardor gained has come to cool
As scarce became the fire’s fuel

Return, my friend, with Love renewed
Be filled again with Life imbued
Your Light and warmth returning, strong
With what you’ve longed for all along

Killing Time

7/5/24

A man was caught while killing time
Little did he see the crime
In what he often chose to do
While wasting life, just passing through

His fingertips, with little care
For what great missions he could bear
He’d chosen idleness in ways
That turned to rubbish all is days

Carpe Diem! He then heard
A foreign yet intriguing word
Up he went to give a try
To days well spent, both far and nigh

How new he felt! His heart could pound
When hearing any needful sound
For now he knew his role to play
When dullness longed to burst to day

Flash

6/30/24

All bark but no bite
Big grip but no might
Big fish but no fight
Big flash but no light

All talk but no walk
You write but no chalk
So scared when you stalk
They fight and you balk!

[Chorus]
I’ve seen you before
Expected much more
The chains that you wore
Show lessons you bore
[Repeat chorus]

You sought a fake crown
Then king was cast down
Then king became clown
Then smile became frown

From mountain to cave
From how you behave
The honor they gave
Has passed like a wave

[Chorus]
I’ve seen you before
Expected much more
The chains that you wore
Show lessons you bore
[Repeat chorus]

All show but no skill
All hunt but no kill
Ideas without will
A shell without fill

It’s time to step up
No longer that pup
It’s time you’ve grown up
Start filling that cup

[Chorus]
I’ve seen you before
Expected much more
The chains that you wore
Show lessons you bore
[Repeat chorus]

Eerie Beauty

6/12/24

Eerie beauty, fallen, froze in flight
What happened to this creature? Did a fight
Cast down this unsuspecting animal
By kin approached, turned foe, and forced to fall?

A mystery lay fresh upon the ground
Where such a graceful misery is found
While awed in stillness, watchers hold their breath
The life of nature drowns the passing death
